Abstract
The development of the concept of "citizenship" in time and epochs is really interesting. It includes the basic principles on human/society interaction, as well as the current democratic principles.
The material clarifies the concepts of "citizen" and "citizenship" in the 21st century and the features that distinguish them from nationality. It focuses on European citizenship, clarifying the meaning embedded in it through the current legal framework - the Treaty establishing the European Union and the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU.
